Denver Nursing School Admission Requirements

Admission to Denver Nursing Schools: Why Meeting the Minimums Is Not the Same as Getting In

Here is the misunderstanding that costs applicants a year. A program publishes its minimums, an applicant ticks every box on the list, and a rejection letter still arrives. Nothing went wrong with the paperwork. Nursing cohorts have fixed seats, selection is comparative, and a minimum is a floor for being considered, not a prediction of an offer. This page works through what Denver area programs actually ask for, where the real competition happens, and how to organise an application, without leaning on deadlines or class availability that will date.

Begin with the destination, because requirements follow the credential. A certificate or diploma in practical nursing leads toward LPN licensure. A prelicensure associate or bachelor program that qualifies its graduates leads toward RN licensure. RN to BSN study exists for people who are already registered nurses; it cannot produce a first license. A pre-nursing associate degree may set you up to transfer, but it is not, without more, a nursing degree that qualifies you for the RN examination.

The Six Routes at a Glance

Route Usual academic starting point How admission is distinguished
RN to BSN A registered nurse license, or stated eligibility for dual enrolment Verification of transcripts and of the license; frequently delivered online
LPN to RN bridge An active LPN license together with college prerequisites Rules on prior learning and work experience differ between schools
Accelerated BSN An earlier bachelor degree outside nursing, plus the prerequisite sciences Close scrutiny of the file and a commitment to full time clinical study
Conventional prelicensure BSN College prerequisites, or progression inside a university Transfer handling, GPA, and nursing admission are university specific
ADN / AAS in nursing Prerequisites in science and general education Competitive ranking is common, built on GPA and HESI or TEAS
Practical nursing (LPN) A high school credential and the prerequisites named by the school TEAS, interviews, and clinical clearance may all feature

The Grade Point Average Trap

Schools quote a minimum GPA as a threshold of eligibility. In a selective program, applicants are then ranked, and ranking can draw on the GPA across prerequisites, test performance, documented healthcare work, co-requisites already finished, and other published factors. Exceeding every threshold is therefore compatible with missing the cohort when more qualified people apply than there are places.

Notice, too, that each program builds its GPA its own way. Arapahoe Community College sets out a 3.0 across its combined prerequisites for the Nursing AAS, inside a points based ranking that also takes grades, healthcare experience, and HESI outcomes into account. For its Westminster ADN, Front Range Community College quotes 3.0 over designated prerequisite coursework. Community College of Aurora also ranks on prerequisite GPA against a 3.0 floor. Calculating the figure the program itself uses matters more than the headline GPA on your transcript.

Bachelor level entry has its own variations. CU Anschutz works to a minimum 3.0 prerequisite GPA on UCAN, its accelerated pathway. At Regis University, the accelerated BSN admissions page and the program FAQ have not always shown the same cumulative GPA threshold, so obtain the requirement currently in force, in writing, from Regis before you judge your own eligibility. A strong overall average never cancels out a science that is missing or a prerequisite that has expired.

Entrance Examinations: HESI, TEAS, or Neither

Two tests dominate locally and they are not substitutes for each other. The HESI Admission Assessment, known as HESI A2, and the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills, TEAS for short, both probe readiness for study, yet their subject coverage differs, and every school names the test it accepts, the scores it demands, how many retakes it allows, and how old a score may be. Do not register for either until the requirement of your target program is confirmed.

School or pathway Example drawn from published material What an applicant should take from it
Regis accelerated BSN The program FAQ indicates no review of HESI, TEAS or GRE Put your effort into transcripts, science preparation, and the application documents
Community College of Denver, practical nursing ATI TEAS, with a minimum published per subject Plan for the test fee and for retakes the policy permits
Front Range, Westminster ADN HESI A2 across five subjects, Critical Thinking among them, and an 80% average Check which subject reports are required and how long scores stay valid
Arapahoe, Nursing AAS HESI A2, with stated minimums in English and mathematics Read the complete rules on scores and sections, not the headline

Clearing a minimum score can still leave you uncompetitive in a program where the test feeds the ranking. Study against the subject mix of the actual examination you will sit. Where retakes are capped or a waiting period applies, leave room in your schedule to hold an official score report in good time, and avoid paying for duplicate tests you did not need.

When Healthcare Experience Counts, and When It Is Compulsory

Experience in healthcare sits in four different policy positions across Denver programs: required outright, preferred, converted into selection points, or ignored. Treating those as one policy is a common reading error. In its application requirements for the Nursing AAS, Arapahoe names Colorado CNA certification, and its ranking gives recognition to patient care employment. UCAN at CU Anschutz requires healthcare experience without fixing an absolute minimum of hours on its current admissions page, while indicating that more documented experience competes better. Elsewhere, traditional and transfer BSN routes may simply encourage some exposure to healthcare settings.

Experience that counts can be gathered in direct patient care, in volunteering, in the emergency services, and elsewhere, though schools do not credit every activity formally. Keep your own evidence as you go: employer, duties, supervisor, hours, and any certification you hold. Then ask each school plainly which roles it counts, and whether the experience has to be complete before your file is assessed.

Clearance to Enter Clinical Settings

Being admitted academically and being cleared for clinical work are related, but they are not the same decision. A student may hold a nursing place and still have to satisfy conditions set by clinical sites before contact with patients. Requirements can cover vaccination records, screening for tuberculosis, health documentation, checks on background, drug screening, cover for student liability, CPR or Basic Life Support certification, and evidence of health insurance. When each item falls due, which providers are accepted, and in what format documents must arrive all vary.

Front Range describes, following admission to its ADN, a set of immunisations, BLS Provider certification from the American Heart Association, a drug screen, and a background check. Community College of Denver’s practical nursing clearance likewise runs through medical documentation, drug screening, and a check on your background. Read any published policy on disqualifying offences closely, and raise possible licensing implications with an admissions representative, because a school’s acceptance cannot guarantee that a license will follow.

Timetabling is the quiet complication. Clinical placements can fall outside ordinary classroom hours, and a program labelled daytime, part time, online, or hybrid may still put skills laboratories on site and supervised practice inside healthcare facilities. If you are working or arranging childcare, ask how much flexibility clinical days genuinely allow, what travel is expected, and whether the program finds the placements.

Transcripts and the Transfer Credit File

Request a transcript from every college you have attended, including those where you finished nothing; the school that granted your highest award is not the whole record. Before applying, look hard at repeated courses, incomplete grades, and rules about how recent science study must be. Where a college will assess transferable prerequisites ahead of application, take the offer early. One program may accept an older anatomy course happily while another places it outside its recency window.

Moving between Colorado community colleges does not settle equivalency either. Even where course numbering is shared across the state system, confirm acceptance with the nursing program that would receive the credit. Holders of a bachelor degree aiming at accelerated study can still owe laboratory sciences, nutrition, or statistics. A completed degree removes none of a program’s own prerequisite list.

Prerequisite Classes, Mapped

RN programs around Denver commonly rest on anatomy and physiology, microbiology, English composition, development across the lifespan, mathematics, and nutrition. The courses demanded, the grades attached to them, and the order they must be taken in are set school by school. A course title that sounds close enough is not evidence: match it against the course number and description the receiving program publishes, and seek a transcript evaluation where doubt remains.

  • Nutrition, chemistry, mathematics or statistics: the spread of expectations here is wide when ADN, practical nursing, and accelerated routes are compared.
  • General education: humanities and other requirements of a bachelor degree can affect transfer and graduation without being prerequisites for nursing admission at all.
  • English and communication: composition in English is a frequent condition of entry.
  • Human development or psychology: lifespan development, general psychology, or both appear on many lists.
  • Microbiology: a regular requirement on RN pathways, and a laboratory element may be demanded.
  • Anatomy and physiology: one course or two, laboratory work often included, with the count set by the program.

Two Denver examples show why generalisations fail. Front Range’s admissions material for the Westminster ADN names foundational biology, human growth and development, English composition, and the opening anatomy and physiology course among the prerequisites for applying. Microbiology and nutrition sit in a different category there: they may still be under way when you apply, but they must be finished before admission becomes final. The practical nursing page at Community College of Denver names a different set entirely: composition in English, mathematics for clinical calculations, introductory anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology at two credits. These are illustrations from individual programs, not a checklist for Colorado.

Five Schools, Five Different Doors

Arapahoe Community College, associate nursing. ACC rewards applicants who arrive with prerequisites complete and who can satisfy its CNA and HESI conditions. Ranking favours stronger grades and may credit healthcare experience or supporting courses already finished. Take care to identify which set of rules you are reading: the conventional ADN, the bridge for LPNs, and the RN to BSN completion program at the same college run separate admissions tracks.

Front Range Community College: the Westminster associate route. Two admissions happen here, one to the college and one to the nursing cohort, and prerequisites for applying are distinguished from subjects that may be completed before nursing enrolment is final. The published HESI A2 subject list and test rules repay close reading. The college’s LPN to ADN route layers on licensure and experience conditions and should never be merged with first time ADN entry.

Community College of Denver, practical nursing. This is a different credential from an ADN, and its application should be built accordingly: the named basic science, clinical mathematics, English, and medical terminology prerequisites, your TEAS result, and then clinical clearance. Selection is holistic and can involve an interview and a written response. The college website and its catalog have shown differing totals for credits, so verify the curriculum that applies to you before planning either cost or graduation.

Community College of Aurora, associate nursing. CCA publishes ranking built on prerequisites, taking in academic performance and healthcare experience. Its newer nursing program operates with interim approval from the Colorado Board and has not yet secured national accreditation for the nursing program, so examine those facts next to the admission standards rather than after them. State approval and candidacy with ACEN do not add up to full programmatic accreditation.

CU Anschutz and Regis, options for graduates changing field. UCAN at CU Anschutz and the accelerated BSN at Regis both serve holders of a bachelor degree outside nursing, and both demand serious prerequisite work and an intensive period of study. CU’s arrangements separate what is required in healthcare experience from what is merely preferred, while Regis weighs academic record together with application materials. Compare prerequisites, the way each calculates GPA, healthcare expectations, attendance for clinical work in person, and the complete price before you settle on an accelerated route.

What Applying Itself Costs

Preparation has a price tag beyond tuition. Budget for prerequisite classes and their laboratory fees, transcripts ordered officially, fees for applying, entrance examinations and any preparation for them, records of immunisation, CPR training, and background checks. A second group of costs only lands after admission. Ask each school for an itemised estimate, and whether grants, scholarships, or other support can be applied to prerequisite study. Never set a per credit price from one college against a whole program price from a private school as though the two described the same thing.

Plan also for refusal. Oversubscribed programs turn away qualified people, so line up alternatives whose prerequisites overlap with your first choice, verifying equivalencies before you rely on the overlap. A further application round may call for a new examination score, refreshed experience evidence, or a rewritten personal statement. Before repeating a whole science course, ask what retakes do to the specific admission GPA or ranking formula you are being judged by.

Your Application Campaign, in Eight Moves

Admission work goes more smoothly in this order. Treat it as a checklist to complete rather than a description of any one school’s rules.

  1. Decide on the license and degree first, then nominate two or three program types that realistically fit.
  2. Build a spreadsheet, one row per school, capturing prerequisite courses, rules on course age, testing requirements, and where transcripts must be sent.
  3. Complete prerequisites in their required order, protecting laboratory sciences, which may be timetabled less often.
  4. Sit only the HESI or TEAS examination your program specifies, leaving time for a permitted retake.
  5. Request evaluations of transfer credit, and gather transcripts, evidence of experience, references, and written pieces.
  6. Forward plan the health clearances, background checks, BLS, and travel to clinical sites, without buying services earlier than a school advises.
  7. Before sending anything, work through the live official checklist for that program and confirm every item is present.
  8. Present the file carefully. A persuasive application is accurate, organised, and shaped to its reader. Learn what the program says it values, whether academic preparation, service, professional experience, or all three, and use short, concrete examples of responsibility, communication, patient contact, and persistence. Never let volunteer or CNA work be described as licensed nursing practice. Interviews, references, essays, and a résumé all appear in different combinations; Regis describes review of academic performance, references, a personal statement, and earlier healthcare or volunteer experience for its accelerated BSN, while UCAN at CU Anschutz builds its file from recommendations and an essay alongside a résumé, with an interview possible. Missing material can leave an otherwise qualified applicant incomplete, so verify the current system and its document list with each school directly.

Questions Applicants Ask Us

Is TEAS or HESI the easier test?

They overlap in places and diverge in others. Which feels harder depends on your own strengths, and in any case the school chooses the examination, not you. Build your preparation around the sections of the test your program accepts.

Can prerequisites be done online?

General education and some science can be found in online or blended formats, but a receiving school may attach conditions about laboratories, about the accreditation of the institution teaching the course, or about how it was delivered. Obtain approval for the specific course before you enrol in it, above all when science credit is being transferred.

What GPA do Denver programs expect?

Colorado has no single figure, and neither does Denver. A 3.0 threshold over prerequisite work is published by several local ADN programs, but others construct a different GPA or set a different floor. Meeting a stated GPA never carries a guarantee of a place. The current policy of the individual program is the document that matters.

Are any Denver nursing programs entirely online?

For a first license, expect skills teaching and supervised clinical education in person; neither is removed by lectures delivered online. Completion study toward a BSN, for nurses already licensed, can be much more flexible online, although projects in the community or practicum elements may still require attendance.

Must I already be a CNA?

It depends on the pathway, not the campus. CNA certification appears in the requirements for the conventional Nursing AAS at ACC. UCAN requires healthcare experience while setting no single universal figure for hours. Read the rule for the exact route you intend to take.

If a school admits me, is a license assured?

It is not. Graduation, state eligibility, review of your application, and passing the relevant NCLEX are separate stages. Concerns about background or professional eligibility can bear on licensing quite apart from admission to a school.

First Actions

Let the credential you want lead; do not let an advertised duration do it. Choose programs that fit the education you already have, compare their official prerequisite lists, and total both the work needed to be ready and the full cost of training. For details that change, go to official admissions pages and Colorado’s regulatory sources before you pay fees or enrol anywhere.
